Beyond EDC: Embracing Every Day Readiness for a Secure Life

Spend five minutes on YouTube and you’ll find a dozen “My Updated EDC” videos—like folks are swapping out gear more often than they change socks. According to market research, the global everyday carry market (knives, multitools, flashlights, etc.) has grown into a multi-billion-dollar industry.

Guys love to tease their wives about constantly switching purses—always chasing the perfect one. Meanwhile, we’re over here rotating flashlights, knives, and multitools like we’re accessorizing a tactical purse. Let’s be honest: EDC is just our version of a handbag—with more MOLLE and less carrying capacity.

But all that shiny gear doesn’t automatically make you safer.

Case in point, I once consulted for a wealthy client who owned every premium EDC item under the sun—an overpriced handgun, a flashlight worth more than my grocery bill, and enough gear to outfit a small tactical team.

He also spent a fortune on a high-end security system, with hidden cameras nestled into landscaping that looked more ready for a photo shoot than to prevent a break-in.

Impressive? Absolutely. Effective? Not entirely.

Despite all that tech, he was missing two of the cheapest—and most effective—deterrents out there: a “Beware of Dog” sign and a good old-fashioned bark.

Mindset; not Toys

I joked that he could’ve spent half as much by just buying two signs: one that said “This property is monitored” and another that said “Beware of Dog.”

To his credit, he took the advice—and even agreed to share the story so others could learn from it.

So let’s shift gears. Because true readiness isn’t about what you carry—it’s about how you think.

A Shift from Products to Mindset

At Archangel Readiness Consulting, we believe true readiness goes beyond gear.

You can buy the most expensive gadgets on the market, but without the right training and mindset, they’re just high-priced accessories.

That’s why I’m launching a new series on Everyday Readiness—a practical approach that combines tools, skills, and a proactive mentality.

We’ll cover products, sure—but more importantly, we’ll dive into the habits and plans that actually keep you safe.

First up: home security.

Because this is such a broad topic, we’re splitting it into two parts.

Part I covers core security principles and how to apply them based on where you live—apartment, suburban neighborhood, or rural property.

Part II focuses on the mindset behind true readiness, firearm considerations, essential medical training, and key takeaways to pull it all together.

The Importance of Home Security in Everyday Readiness

Your home is your refuge—but it may become a target when you least expect it.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, most burglaries happen during the daytime, especially between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m.—right when many people are at work or school. Mondays and Fridays tend to see slightly higher activity, likely due to routine patterns criminals can anticipate.

While we often picture break-ins happening at night, the real danger might be in broad daylight—when no one’s home.

Here’s what many people overlook:

  • 28% of burglaries occur while someone is home.

  • Of those, 7% involve some form of violence against the occupant.

A burglary isn’t always just about stolen property—it can become a personal safety threat in seconds.

How are they getting in?

  • Front and back doors are the most common entry points.

  • In many cases, doors or windows were left unlocked—simple mistakes with serious consequences.

The good news? Deterrents work.

Facts & Tips
Facts & Tips

Homes with visible security measures—cameras, yard signs, barking dogs—are far less likely to be targeted. Criminals want low-risk, easy opportunities, not attention or confrontation.

While the average burglary results in $2,000 to $2,500 in losses, the real cost goes beyond stolen electronics. A break-in can shatter your peace of mind—and that’s something no insurance check can replace.

At Archangel Readiness Consulting, we teach that the best defense is making yourself a harder target. Most criminals look for the path of least resistance—if your home shows signs of awareness and preparation, they’ll move on to an easier mark.

Every Day Readiness isn’t about paranoia—it’s about prevention.

Conclusion: Readiness Starts with a Shift in Mindset

EDC gear has its place—but real security begins long before you clip on a flashlight. It starts with how you think, how you plan, and how you prepare for what could go wrong. Readiness is a lifestyle, not a loadout.

In the next two parts of this series, we’ll go deeper.

Part I will discuss home security and break down the four foundational pillars—Deter, Detect, Delay, and Respond—along with specific strategies for apartments, suburban homes, and rural properties.

Then in Part II, we’ll cover the mindset that ties it all together, including firearm considerations, medical training, and why preparation—not paranoia—is the true path to peace of mind.

Subscribe to our newsletter to make sure you don’t miss the next two parts—covering real-world home security strategies and the mindset that makes them work.
